FiberWork Debuts its Expansion Plans for Venture Capital Audience

5/8/2004

Santa Clara, CA, August 5th, FiberWork Optical Communications (FiberWork) will be presenting its expansion plans and search for venture capital funds at the August 11th Girvan’s Venture Advisory Board Meeting. The company is seeking its first round of venture capital financing, which will allow to streamlined its product manufacturing as well as to distribute its products globally

FiberWork is an early stage company specialized in developing and providing innovative cost-effective fiber optic solutions. Founded in 1999, FiberWork’s success in providing its services in Brazil was able to fund the research and development of unique fiber optic products. The company relies on its highly qualified executive team and world-class R&D personnel, located in Brazil, to deliver its first class fiber optic solutions worldwide. By conducting its R&D offshore, FiberWork is able to achieve very low R&D costs as compared to international standards.

FiberWork’s products ready to market are the OSPA (Optical S-Parameter Analyzer) - an award-winning, superior technology, patented equipment for full, fast, precise and cost-effective characterization of passive optical devices during R&D and production and the FWL210 Optical Telephony System – an unique cost-effective product for voice and low transmission rate communications, with a 180km fiber reach and a broad range of applications.

The following telecom projects are in the company R&D pipeline: FWL250-CSO (Optical Service Channel), FWL250-FSO (Free Space Optical - wireless - communication system) and FWL300-FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home broadband access system). Non-telecom SBIR-funded R&D projects are: ‘fiber security system for property protection’ and ‘fiber sensor system for the petroleum industry’.

Specialized diagnostics of installed fiber networks is an innovative type of service created by FiberWork. It is intended towards network design optimization, capex and opex savings as well as future-proofing of installed fiber networks. It is also important for dark fiber valuation, swapping and other dark fiber negotiations.

The OSPA’s market will exceed $200 million/year within 3 years while the FWL210 is the only solution for a current $300 millions/year market. Looking at FiberWork’s future products, the FWL300-FTTH has a fast growing market which will be over $1 billion (equipment only) in 2004 and exceed $5 billion in 2006. The market for FSO optical wireless equipments is expected to exceed $1.8 billion from 2005. The security industry was already a over $100 billion market and growing at an average rate of 8% before the September 11th. FiberWork’s oil well sensor belongs to a market which currently exceeds $ 1 billion dollar/year. Although FiberWork’s services have funded the company’s R&D so far, the plan is not to continue them, moving forward to focus the company’s resources on its promising products.

About Girvan’s Venture Advisory Board:
The Venture Advisory Board is a monthly meeting that provides GIRVAN's Service Affiliates with a sneak preview of the most exciting technologies that are being developed at the NASA Ames Research Center, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, the Aerospace Corp., and select GIRVAN affiliates. Additionally, it is expected that the advisory board will provide perspectives on technologies of interest and modes of spinout, for example, as start-up companies or by licensing technologies to other companies. The Venture Advisory Board meeting is a closed event and participation is on an invitation only basis. Each meeting focuses on one topic selected from the following areas: nanotechnology and materials; computation and communication; biotech, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals; or energy, manufacturing and environmental sciences. Next meeting will take place on August 11th, 2004, from 10am to 1pm, at the Girvan Institute, 3940 Freedom Circle, Santa Clara, CA. Further details can be obtained at www.girvan.org.
